Wasfia Nazreen has made history as the first Bangladeshi mountaineer to successfully reach the summit of K2, the world’s second-highest peak at 8,611 meters (28,251 feet). Her achievement, confirmed on Thursday, marks a milestone for Bangladesh in extreme-altitude mountaineering. Known for its perilous terrain, K2—often called the “Savage Mountain”—is notorious for steep slopes, unpredictable weather, and high fatality rates, with fewer than 500 climbers summiting since the first ascent in 1954.
Nazreen, 39, previously scaled Mount Everest in 2012 and holds the distinction of being the sole Bangladeshi to complete the Seven Summits challenge, conquering the highest peaks across all continents. Her recent K2 expedition included elite climbers Mingma Tenzi Sherpa, Mingma David Sherpa, and Nirmal Purja. Ahead of the climb, she shared her plans on social media, requesting support from followers as her team prepared for the grueling ascent.
Situated in Pakistan’s Karakoram Range near the Chinese border, K2 remains one of the most technically demanding climbs globally, with winter ascents still unacclaimed. The mountain’s extreme conditions—blistering 200 km/h winds and temperatures plunging to -60°C—pose relentless challenges. Pakistan hosts five of the planet’s 14 peaks exceeding 8,000 meters, solidifying its reputation as a premier destination for elite mountaineers.
