Disturbing accounts of ‘police abuse’

  1. Bangladesh Court Jails Detective Branch Officer Over Alleged Abuse During Student Interrogation

A young law student continues to relive the trauma of July 27, 2024, when she claims detectives confined her in a room, pressured her for information on protest leaders, and subjected her to physical harassment. During the incident, officers allegedly placed a blank confession document before her and threatened her with a firearm, according to her testimony to the International Crimes Tribunal and local media.

The student, a first-year university attendee, recounted that officers demanded details about organizers of the July demonstrations. When she refused, an investigator reportedly touched her hair and body while threatening to frame her in a case linked to the BTV Bhaban protests. She described an officer pressing an unloaded gun to her forehead and mockingly pulling the trigger.

The ordeal began after repeated calls from an unknown number, later identified as a detective using the alias “Javed” from Ramna DB police station. Messages urged her to meet officers near her residence, with authorities eventually instructing her family to bring her to Uttara Paschim Police Station. There, she alleges officers verbally abused her and shoved her father, who has a heart condition, to the ground.

The International Crimes Tribunal recently ordered the arrest and detention of Javed Iqbal, a former assistant commissioner of the Detective Branch, in connection with the case. Investigators confirmed they are tracing other officers involved through mobile phone data from the night of the interrogation.

The student, who spoke anonymously, stated she was released around 1:00 AM on July 28 after hours of intimidation. Authorities have not publicly commented on the allegations, and efforts to reach the implicated police station for responses were unsuccessful.
