Bangladesh Railway Launches Trial Passenger Service on New Jamuna Bridge

Bangladesh Railway initiated trial passenger operations on the newly constructed Jamuna Railway Bridge today, one month ahead of its official opening.

The bridge, now the country’s longest dedicated rail structure, is set to be formally inaugurated on March 18, according to Al Fattah Md Masudur Rahman, BR’s Additional Director General for Infrastructure and project lead. Initial trials without passengers were conducted earlier.

Masudur confirmed one of the bridge’s two tracks is currently being tested for passenger service. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), primary funder of the Tk 17,000+ crore project, will have its president attend the inauguration ceremony.

Spanning 4.8 kilometers over the Jamuna River, the dual-gauge double-track bridge aims to enhance rail links between Dhaka and the nation’s northwestern regions.
