Friday’s was Trump’s second high-level summit with Putin, with both ending without any real substance.
Trump had lavishly praised Putin for about a decade before winning the presidency with his help in 2016. He then pushed for a one-on-one summit with him in Helsinki in 2018, even though there were no close-to-completion agreements on major issues with Russia, which are normally a prerequisite for a top-level meeting.
At a joint press conference afterward, Putin was smiling and appeared confident, while Trump looked unhappy or even frightened. It was at that event that Trump infamously stated he took the word of the KGB-trained spy over that of his own intelligence agencies on the matter of Russia’s work to help Trump win the election.
