Trump over the weekend took the dramatic step of signing a memorandum to deploy the National Guard in the city, against Gov. Gavin Newsom’s (D) wishes, citing a need to “address the lawlessness that has been allowed to fester” during protests sparked by immigration raids there. This was the first time a president has activated the force in a state, bypassing a governor, since 1965.

Newsom stressed that the city “didn’t have a problem until Trump got involved,” calling on the president to rescind his order. In an interview with MSNBC, Newsom also described Trump’s move to deploy the Guard as “illegal,” adding that he will soon be filing a lawsuit against the president. The demonstrations are expected to continue on Monday.

Harris and Emhoff moved to the Brentwood area of Los Angeles following her defeat to Trump in the 2024 presidential election. Harris, a former California attorney general, is reportedly weighing a gubernatorial run for 2026 as Newsom will be term-limited after serving eight years in the role. She is expected to make her decision by the end of the summer.
